Behind the Smoke: Life, BBQ, and Everything In Between

Hey BBQ Fam,

The holidays are over. The decorations are down. The credit card statements are… sobering.
And suddenly everyone is supposed to be eating cleaner, doing better, and magically having more energy than they did in December.

Yeah. Sure.

Winter has settled in, routines are creeping back, and the “new year, new me” motivation is already getting tested by dark afternoons and busy schedules. That’s where we come in. Because some nights, the best decision you can make is not cooking — it’s showing up hungry and letting someone else take care of dinner. Or letting us handle the food so you can actually enjoy your meeting, party, or gathering without stress.

This month’s dispatch has a little bit of everything.

Our featured article, Good BBQ Should Never Make You Feel Bad: How a Road Trip Sparked a BBQ Revolution,” goes back to the early days — before the restaurant, before the team — when it was just us, a smoker, and a stubborn belief that BBQ could be done better. It’s about shared goals, hard conversations, burnout, and the kind of belly laughs that keep a marriage (and a business) standing when the heat is high.

If you’ve ever worked with your partner, dreamed of building something from scratch, or wondered how two people survive long hours, real pressure, and literal fire — this one’s for you.

And if you just need a solid meal that hits right and doesn’t add to your to-do list?
We’re here for that too.

From weddings to first responders—here’s why catering changes everything

BBQ isn’t just food. It’s comfort, connection, and celebration on a plate. This summer, our catering team had the honor of being part of some incredible moments: weddings, birthdays, corporate lunches, team appreciation events, graduations, and even a product launch.

So, as we settle into the heart of winter, here’s what’s coming up at Code 1 — the good stuff, the fun stuff, and the “finally, something to look forward to” stuff:

🔥 BBQ Classes Are Live
Our Beyond the Smoke classes are officially on the calendar.
Master Your BBQ: March 8 & May 17 (tickets Live for March 8th now)
Backyard BBQ Basics: April 19 & June 7 (Tickets coming soon)
Early bird pricing is happening right now, and if you’ve ever wanted to go from “I dabble” to “I dominate,” this is your moment. Spots are limited, and yes — they always book fast.

🍻 Liquor License Incoming
Yup. It’s happening.
Very soon, you’ll be able to enjoy your pulled pork, brisket, cornbread, mac & cheese, and ribs with a cold beer, cocktail, or glass of wine. We’ve been waiting a long time to say that.
Stay tuned — it’s going to elevate the entire dine-in experience.

🍽️ Catering That Makes You Look Good
Holiday season may be over, but event season never stops. We’re catering birthdays, anniversaries, corporate gatherings, awards nights, workshops, and “just because it’s Tuesday and we’re hungry” parties.
From boxed lunches to full buffets, we make you look like you planned for weeks — even if you didn’t.

Thanks for being part of our BBQ family — the loyal, the curious, the ribs-on-a-random-Wednesday crowd, and everyone who keeps cheering us on.

We’re gearing up for a big year, and we’re glad you’re here for the ride.
Stay warm, stay hungry, and stop in soon.
